Why should I use professional product photographer's service? Wouldn't be worth for myself to invest in professional DSLR camera and good lens and take photos myself?

These are the questions that many clients are asking. My answer is: The photographer takes a picture, not a camera.

Keep in mind: Professional Product Photographer is a profession and this occupation is a full time job. Of course you can learn it just like anybody else, but would you do the same with all other professions? You want to fix the car - learn how to become car mechanic, fix your television - learn how to do it, etc. In each case, you need the tools, knowledge and experience.

With all sophisticated equipment available on the market, measuring exposure will be done by the camera, but in PRO product photography you never set up camera in automatic mode. Professional cameras have been designed to be used in manual mode. It does have automatic mode too, but you'll be surprised what would the difference be between the photograph from point and shoot and pro camera. In many cases point and shoot photographs may look much better than pro.

Here is very common question the people ask me: What kind of camera should I buy to do good pictures? Again the best answer I come up with is comparison to the car purchase:

What kind of car should I buy to drive safely? Of course to some point sophisticated safety features of the car matter, but main factor is still the driver. Same thing with paint brushes. Does purchasing brand name Rembrandt paint brushes make you a great painter?

In my next article I will explain you what are the most important factors in product photography that contribute to the perfect photograph.

Capturing the brilliance of diamond jewellery requires much more than a camera—it demands technical precision, controlled lighting, and an experienced editor who understands how to reveal every facet of the stone. At Product Photo Canada, I specialize in high-end jewellery photography for e-commerce and designers across Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Burlington.

The featured image showcases a pair of gold earrings set with a round brilliant-cut diamond and an emerald-cut diamond. To capture their fire, sparkle, and purity, the entire setup was carefully designed to minimize unwanted reflections while enhancing every highlight.

Professional Lighting and Reflector Technique

Jewellery is one of the most challenging subjects to photograph because metals and diamonds reflect everything around them. For this shoot, I used a controlled multi-light setup designed specifically for fine jewellery:

 • Soft diffused key light to maintain even illumination across the metal

 • Precision reflectors positioned to create clean, bright highlights on the diamonds

 • Side micro-fill reflectors to reveal facets without blowing out the sparkle

 • Directional accent lights to add depth and separation

By shaping the light with reflectors, I ensure each diamond reveals its internal brilliance and each metal surface looks polished, smooth, and high-value.

Macro Lens for Extreme Detail

Fine jewellery demands extreme precision. This image was captured using a specialized macro lens, allowing:

 • Ultra-sharp focus on even the smallest facets

 • Accurate representation of diamond cuts

 • Crisp details without distortion

 • Perfect edge definition on claws, prongs, and settings

Macro work is unforgiving—every dust particle, micro-scratch, and reflection is visible. That’s why proper shooting technique and an expert editing workflow are essential.

Advanced Editing for Luxury Results

High-end jewellery retouching is a specialized discipline. The editing process includes:

 • Removing microscopic dust and imperfections

 • Enhancing diamond sparkle while maintaining authenticity

 • Balancing metal tones

 • Eliminating harsh reflections

 • Ensuring accurate colour reproduction

This level of precision requires a highly skilled editor who understands jewellery structure, light behaviour, and the expectations of luxury brands. My editing workflow ensures every final image meets the standard required for e-commerce, Shopify, Amazon, catalogues, and high-end marketing campaigns.

Serving Jewellery Brands Across the GTA

Whether you are a jewellery designer, retailer, manufacturer, or e-commerce seller, professional images play a crucial role in attracting customers and increasing conversions. I provide mobile studio services across:

 • Toronto

 • Mississauga

 • Oakville

Every shoot includes expert lighting, macro precision, and high-level retouching to ensure your diamonds and metals look flawless.

Commercial Product Photography Toronto

Macro Photography opens the door to a world invisible to the naked eye — from watch components to jewellery details and miniature tools. Recently, I worked on a macro photography assignment capturing hands for luxury wristwatches, where precision and lighting control were essential.

Lighting Setup

For this project, I used three professional LED panels, providing a total of 1,800 LEDs.
Consistent, diffused lighting is crucial for tiny objects — it eliminates harsh reflections and ensures every fine engraving or texture is visible. The panels were positioned to minimize glare and highlight the contours of the watch hands without creating unwanted shadows.

Camera Positioning and Stability

Because watch hands are extremely flat and reflective, the best perspective was a perfect 90-degree top-down view.
To achieve this, I mounted my Canon camera on a sturdy tripod with a horizontal extension arm, allowing me to position the lens precisely above the subject.

Any vibration can ruin sharpness at macro scale, so I took several measures to ensure absolute stability:

Mirror lock-up activated to prevent internal vibration.

Tethered shooting using a laptop — no need to touch the camera.

Remote shutter release controlled via computer mouse.

This workflow allows for precise focusing and exposure adjustment directly from the computer screen.

Camera Settings and Focus

Shooting in fully manual mode gives total control over the exposure and depth of field.
Here are the key settings used in this session:

Shutter speed: 1/30 sec

Aperture: f/13

ISO: 1200

In Live View mode, I could magnify the focus area and ensure razor-sharp results where it mattered most — the tip of the second hand. The combination of high f-stop and stable lighting helped capture every micron of detail.

Tethered Workflow

Tethering to the laptop also provides immediate review and adjustment. Using color calibration tools and reference charts (as shown in the setup photos) ensures consistent results across the entire series — an essential step in commercial product photography for e-commerce and luxury brands.

If your business requires macro or high-end product photography in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, or Burlington, I provide on-location and studio setups designed to capture even the smallest details in perfect clarity.

Pricing in product photography isn’t one-size-fits-all. Materials, lighting changes, styling, quantity, and post-production all shape the final quote. Here’s how I build accurate, value-driven estimates for brands in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Burlington.

Understanding Product Photography Pricing: What Determines the Cost?

Short version: Pricing in product photography isn’t flat—each product needs its own lighting, styling, and retouching approach. Below I explain the factors so you can plan an accurate budget and get images that convert.

At Photography by George, I create high-end e-commerce and advertising images across the GTA (Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington). Here’s what drives cost—and how we keep quality high and surprises low.

1) Nature of the product

Jewellery & glossy items: highly reflective, require precision lighting and pixel-level retouching.

Glassware: clear glass needs gradients, flags, and extra cleanup; opaque glass/ceramics are simpler.

Leather goods: staging matters—shaping, stuffing, strap placement, and inside views add time.

2) Lighting & setup adjustments

Every setup change (background swap, modifier change, camera height/angle) adds time. Examples:

Sport wrist wrap: controlled contrast to show fabric texture and logo clarity.

Decorative wreath: soft, even light to preserve colour accuracy and depth.

Model ship: layered lighting and careful angles for rigging, sails, and wood details.

3) Size & handling

Tabletop products move quickly. Large or heavy items (furniture, machinery) require extra assistance, larger sets, or on-location work.

4) Styling & staging

Great photos are crafted. Mannequins, live models, props, and lifestyle scenes improve results and influence timing.

5) Quantity & efficiency

Multiple similar SKUs let me standardize lighting for consistency and better per-image value.

6) Editing & post-production

Retouching ranges from quick corrections to advanced cleanup, colour matching, reflection control, and background removal
(Shopify/Amazon-ready white or transparent PNGs). Transparent or glossy items typically require extra time.

How to get an accurate quote

Number of products and angles per product

Materials & surface (reflective, textured, transparent)

Background or scene (pure white, coloured, lifestyle, on-location)

Usage (website, marketplace, print, large banners)

Deadline and delivery format (JPG, PNG, TIFF, clipping paths)

Result: a transparent estimate aligned to your goals, with images that lift conversions and brand trust.

What defines quality in Product Photography in Toronto?

Discover what makes professional product photography clear and crisp. Learn how lighting and editing deliver high-quality images for your products.

Do you want to learn more about Photography by George approach to the product photography? Click here click here to see my another blog article.

One of the most common questions clients ask me is:

“How come your pictures are so clear and crispy?”

It’s a great question, but the answer is similar to asking: “How do you prepare good food?” There’s never just one factor. In product photography —whether it’s furniture, fashion, jewellery, food, glass, cosmetics, or metallic objects—several elements combine to create the final image.

1. Studio Lighting Setup

Good lighting is where it all begins. Even within the same product category, lighting setups must be adapted to the material and surface.

 • Jewellery: Diamonds and gemstones require custom lighting to highlight brilliance without harsh reflections.

 • Furniture: Glass, wood, and upholstery all need different approaches to show texture and detail.

 • Food: Packaged items, bottled drinks, and plated meals each demand unique setups to make them look fresh and appetizing.

2. The Editing Process

Post-production is equally important. Editing can take a few minutes—or up to 1–2 hours per photo—depending on the complexity.

 • Jewellery: remove dust and scratches, enhance sparkle

 • Furniture: correct lines, refine materials, match colors

 • Food: balance tones and textures for natural appeal

Final Thoughts

Professional product photography combines technical skill and creativity. From lighting to editing, every step is customized to ensure your products look their absolute best.
